Staring at elimination, two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab will lock horns in a battle of survival in Friday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Mohali.

The two teams are languishing at the bottom half of the table and need to win on Thursday to keep alive their remote playoff chances. Both KKR and Kings XI have 10 points from 12 matches but the Kolkata outfit is placed a rung above Punjab at sixth in the eight-team competition by virtue of a better net run-rate.

Both KKR and Kings XI had a decent outing in the first half of the tournament before losing the plot in the all-important second phase.

After registering four wins and one loss in the first five games, KKR suffered six defeats in a row that derailed their campaign.

Here’s a look at the top five player battles to watch out for in the match between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chris Lynn vs Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami will be fancying his chances against Chris Lynn, because he has an excellent record against him in T20s. The fast bowler has dismissed the Australian twice, while Lynn has managed just 12 runs off 13 balls against the fast bowler. Lynn will be hoping to better his record against Shami in their next match.

Andre Russell vs Ravichandran Ashwin

Andre Russell has thrashed every bowling attack he has come across in this IPL, however he hasn’t been tested enough by spinners in this season. Ashwin has dismissed the West Indian once in T20s and Russell has scored nine runs off five balls against the off-spinner. It will be interesting to see if Russell takes the aggressive approach against Ashwin in their next match.

KL Rahul vs Sunil Narine

KL Rahul and Sunil Narine have had an interesting battle in T20s so far. The opening batsman has scored 69 runs off 31 balls at a strike-rate of 222.58 against Narine, however, the spinner has dismissed Rahul twice in the shortest format. Narine will be certainly hoping to get Rahul out early on in his innings.

Chris Gayle vs Piyush Chawla

Chris Gayle will be waiting to face Piyush Chawla in their next match since he has always had an upper hand against the bowler in T20s. The West Indian has scored 116 runs off 64 balls and has been dismissed just once by the leg-spinner. Chawla will be hoping to improve his record against Gayle on Friday.

Dinesh Karthik vs Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Mujeeb Ur Rahman had one of his worst nights in T20s in his last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He conceded 66 runs in four overs and didn’t pick up a wicket. The off-spinner will be looking to bounce back and he will certainly look to topple the KKR skipper for some much needed confidence. However, Dinesh Karthik hasn’t been dismissed by Mujeeb in T20s yet and has scored 24 runs off 10 balls against the spinner.
