GT vs MI IPL 2024 Highlights: In the battle of new captains, it was Shubman Gill who came out on top as the Mumbai Indians lost their first match of the season for the 12th consecutive time.
GT vs MI IPL 2024 Highlights: Mumbai Indians lost the opening match of an IPL for the 12th consecutive time with Hardik Pandya's first game as captain of the side ending in a six-run loss on a day when he was constantly booed by the crowd in Ahmedabad. Chasing a target of 169, MI needed 19 to win off the last over after Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma applied the squeeze on them. Pandya was on strike and hit a six and a four off the first two balls. However, Umesh Yadav fought back by dismissing Pandya off the third ball and then getting another wicket off the next. MI had lost two early wickets but Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis put them on top. Azmatullah Omarzai first dismissed Ishan Kishan for a duck in the first over and the big-hitting Naman Dhir in the third over. Rohit and Brevis then put MI back on top as they sent the GT bowlers all around the park. Rohit missed out on a half-century, falling to Sai Kishore on 43 off 29 and the partnership between him and Brevis ended on 77 off 55. MI earlier won the toss and chose to bowl first in Pandya's first match as their captain. GT looked set to get a score close to or in excess of 200 but Bumrah's brilliance restricted them to a score of 168/6. Pandya chose to start the MI attack himself and his first over ended up going for 11 runs. Surprisingly, he ended up coming back for the third over instead of handing the ball to Bumrah after Luke Wood bowled the second and conceded nine.
Bumrah then came in and got the first wicket for MI in the form of Wriddhiman Saha with his trademark yorker. GT's good start was then pushed back further by spinners Piyush Chawla and Shams Mulani, with the former dismissing captain Shubman Gill on 31 off 22. GT were then buoyed by some strong knocks from Sai Sudharsan, who scored 45 off 39 along with Azmatullah Omarzai and David Miller. Bumrah returned in the 17th over to dismiss Miller and Sudharsan.
