Former Australian captain Greg Chappell feels given its increasing popularity, the Indian Premier League would soon become a world event and take cricket to hitherto unexplored regions.
"I can see the day when IPL becomes a world format and we'll have New York playing Bombay playing Beijing playing Sydney playing London," Chappell said.
Chappell said the growing Twenty20 mania and the dwindling spectator count in Test matches could see cricket's oldest and longest format shrinking to just four or five countries, feels the former Australian captain.
"I have a feeling that Test cricket is going to reduce in size rather than grow in size," Chappell was quoted as saying by 'The Daily Telegraph'.
"I can see a time where there will be four or five major countries playing Test match cricket," he said.
The former coach of the Indian team, who played 87 Tests in his career, said the administrators of the game need to protect the one-day format as it might become the longest format of the game in many countries in the times to come.
"It's another reason why 50-over cricket needs to be supported and given a rethink because 50-over cricket could well become the Test cricket of the future for a lot of cricket-playing countries," he said.
