Riding on twin tons by skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera, Sri Lanka piled up a commanding 406 for three on the first day of the first cricket Test against Pakistan at the National Stadium in karachi on Saturday.
Pakistan bowling attack appeared rusty and lacking penetration as Jayawardene paired up with Samaraweera to score an unbroken 229-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Jayawardene, who hit his 25th Test hundred, was batting on 136 after facing 239 balls with the help of 20 boundaries and Samaraweera was giving his skipper company on 155-ball 130, which included 21 boundaries, when stumps were drawn for the day.
Electing to bat, the visitors took advantage of a placid pitch and sent Younis Khan-led Pakistan for a leather hunt throughout the day.
Jayawardene, who on Saturday became the first Sri Lankan and only the 20th batsmen in history of Test cricket to reach 8000-run mark, also achieved the rare distinction of hitting a century against all Test playing nations.
The lack of experience in Pakistan bowling attack was evident and to make matters worse for the hosts, Jayawardene was dropped twice -- on 43 and 123 -- at the slip cordon.
