The latest supporter to join the bandwagon rooting for the Master Blaster to be bestowed with the country's highest civilian award is the Maharastra government.
The Maharashtra government recommended batting icon Sachin Tendulkar for the Bharat Ratna on Wednesday, reports said.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan made the announcement in the state assembly.
Chants of honouring the bastman with the award have been doing the rounds since India won the World Cup 2011 in April last year.
The batsman who started playing international cricket at the age of 16 became the only player to score 100 international centuries on March 16 this year. This feat has been termed "impossible to beat" by many veterans.
Lauding Sachin Tendulkar for his phenomenal feat of scoring 100 international centuries, BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla on Monday said the cricket icon should be honoured with the country's highest civilian award.
"There is a lot more cricket left in him. He should get the highest civilian award," Shukla said.
In November 2011, the government modified rules to pave way for eligibility of sportspersons for the Bharat Ratna.
"Instead of the fields of art, literature, science and public services, now on November 16, Government has notified that for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour Bharat Ratna could be awarded," sports minister Maken said.
