Harmanpreet Kaur created history last week when she was signed by Sydney Thunder to become the first Indian women’s cricketer to play in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
However, the India vice-captain’s dreams of playing in the T20 league seem to be in jeopardy. HT has learnt that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is scheduled to host West Indies in November and Sri Lanka in December. As a result, the domestic season for women cricketers will witness an early start in October.
“India is bound to host West Indies and Sri Lanka as these series were scheduled to take place earlier this year. It is a commitment that the BCCI has to fulfill,” a source told HT.
Kaur’s participation in the Women’s Big Bash League, which will take place from December 10 to January 28, looks difficult, at least for the start of the tournament as she will be on national duty.
Kaur has happy memories from her trip Down Under earlier this year where the Punjab all-rounder slammed a 31-ball 46 to help Team India successfully complete the highest-ever run chase (141/5) against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in the first T20I.
India also won the second T20 international at Melbourne via Duckworth-Lewis method to register India’s first T20 series triumph Down Under.
Kaur was Team India’s top performer in the ICC Women’s World T20 which was held along with the men’s World Cup. Kaur scored 89 runs in four T20Is and claimed seven wickets.
