No faking injuries anymore

The use of a runner for an injured batsman has been an integral part of the game, but the 'misuse' of the rule has led to many controversies - the latest example being England skipper Andrew Strauss not allowing his Proteas counterpart, Graeme Smith, to take a runner after getting cramps during the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Such a situation will not arise further with the ICC Chief Executives' Committee, recommending the abolition the option of 'runners' in international cricket.

The rule is likely to come into effect from October 1, 2011 after the ICC Executive Board ratifies the decision.

According to the new rule suggested, any batsman who is injured or is getting cramps will have to retire hurt and can return after recovering.

Former India international Sanjay Manjrekar welcomed the rule. "Got cramps, can I have a runner please? Happy to see this become (sic) a question of the past," he tweeted.

Former international and Bengal Ranji coach, WV Raman was also positive. "With this rule, faking injuries will not help you get a runner."
