In a predictable move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has linked its participation in future International Cricket Council (ICC) events to the radical draft proposal being approved by the ICC’s executive board. The only surprise is that, usually, this kind of warning is sent out when all other avenues are exhausted. This time, the BCCI has put it forward as the first step.
The BCCI, along with Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have drafted a proposal that recommends a structural overhaul of the ICC, seeks a bigger pie of revenues and more decision-making powers to these three cricket boards.
The BCCI threat came after a review of the proposal at its emergent working committee meeting in Chennai on Thursday. “The BCCI members authorised the office-bearers to enter into an agreement with ICC for participating in ICC events and hosting ICC events subject to the proposal being approved in the ICC board,” said a BCCI release from its secretary Sanjay Patel.
The ICC’s quarterly meeting is in Dubai on January 28 and 29 and the proposal must have the support of seven of the 10 full member nations to be passed.
If that happens, the BCCI is set to benefit hugely, especially in sharing in ICC’s profits.
