Jagmohan Dalmiya, the newly elected president of the Cricket Association Bengal, is almost certain to give the BCCI’s working committee meeting on Friday a miss. Still, the last working committee meeting of the current regime is expected to be a stormy affair.
The main issue on the agenda is to finalise the proposal of having “paid selectors”. The idea was mooted after India’s disastrous World Cup campaign last year. It remains to be seen whether the clause on holding an honorary post in any of the affiliated units of the BCCI, which was the prime reason for the postponement of the proposal last year, will stay in the eligibility criteria for a selector.
If the working committee, which appears to be “divided” over the matter, decides not to allow any of the office-bearers of its affiliated units to be a selector, then the current national chairman of the selection panel, Dilip Vengsarkar, who is also the vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, will be ineligible for the post.
While not much opposition is expected over the proposed duration for the selectors’ contracts — two years — and the minimum eligibility - 25 caps for India, there could be argument over remuneration.
