Jason Holder

Age 34West IndiesWEST INDIES
Right Handed All Rounder

From the very beginning, Jason Holder's towering presence made him impossible to overlook on a cricket field, but it was the substance behind the height that eventually made him one of the most respected all-rounders of his generation. A right-arm fast-medium bowler with a calm, measured batting technique to match, Holder built a reputation as both a genuine match-winner and one of the steadiest leaders West Indies cricket has had in the modern era.

Born in Barbados, Holder impressed at youth level and was named in West Indies' squad for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. He finished the tournament as the team's leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets, helping the young Caribbean side to a third-place finish. His performances at domestic level soon followed, earning him a call-up to the senior side, although it took some time for him to establish himself in the team. His ODI debut came against Australia in early 2013, with his T20I and Test debuts following roughly a year later. He made little impact with the ball in his first Test but showed promise with some valuable runs down the order. It was not enough to keep his place, though, and he was left out for the following series against Bangladesh.

Barely a year into his international career, Holder was handed the responsibility of leading West Indies through a difficult period. Still only 23, he took over as ODI captain in 2014, succeeding Dwayne Bravo, before adding the Test captaincy the following year. Questions were initially raised about whether someone so young could lead a dressing room full of senior players, but he answered them in style. In April 2015, with West Indies in trouble at 189/6 against England, Holder batted for more than three and a half hours to save the match, scoring his maiden Test century in the process.

Holder went on to captain West Indies at two Cricket World Cups, in 2015 and 2019, and was part of the squad that won the 2016 T20 World Cup. His individual numbers climbed steadily too. In 2018, he set the record at the time for the fastest West Indian to complete the double of 1,000 ODI runs and 100 ODI wickets, and he also became the first West Indies player to take a hat-trick in T20I cricket. One of the standout innings of his career came in 2019, when he scored an unbeaten double ton against England on his home ground, powering West Indies to a rare, resounding Test win over a top side. Later that year, he became the first West Indian since Garfield Sobers, in 1974, to be ranked the world's No. 1 all-rounder in Tests, and was named Cricket West Indies' Test Player of the Year.

Holder stepped down from the Test captaincy in 2021, handing the role over to Kraigg Brathwaite, but remained a key figure for West Indies across formats with both bat and ball. From 2024 onwards, he increasingly prioritised franchise cricket and the West Indies' limited-overs setup. That focus paid off in 2025, when he captained the Los Angeles Knight Riders to the Major League Cricket title and enjoyed a prolific season with both bat and ball. He carried that form into 2026, becoming the first West Indies bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets during that year's T20 World Cup.
