Hashmatullah Shahidi is a name that resonates deeply in Afghan cricket. A resilient cricketer, he currently holds the prestigious position of captain of the Afghanistan national cricket team in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test cricket. A classy southpaw, known for his textbook cricketing shots, his journey from debutant to captain is marked by remarkable milestones, making him a revered figure in the cricketing world.

Shahidi's initiation into international cricket occurred in October 2013 when he made his ODI debut for Afghanistan against Kenya. His early international career was characterized by determination and promise. His consistent performances and dedication to the sport quickly earned him a place as a vital cog in the Afghan cricketing machinery.

Shahidi was among the elite group of eleven cricketers chosen to represent Afghanistan in their historic maiden Test match against India in June 2018. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of Afghanistan's journey in the longest format of the game, with Shahidi entrusted with the responsibility of being a foundational player.

In March 2021, Hashmatullah Shahidi etched his name in Afghan cricket history by becoming the first Afghan player to score a double century in Test cricket, against Zimbabwe. His remarkable innings of 200 not out was a testament to his grit, determination, and batting prowess. It was a defining moment for both the player and the nation, establishing Afghanistan as a competitive force in Test cricket.

Shahidi’s impact in the limited-overs format has been equally significant. His impressive performances earned him a place in Afghanistan's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he showcased his skill on the global stage. During the World Cup, Shahidi reached a personal milestone by scoring his 1,000th run in ODIs. This achievement, attained in a match against England on June 18, 2019, highlighted his consistency and value to the team. Shahidi’s unwavering presence in ODI cricket solidified his reputation as a dependable batter.

In September 2021, Hashmatullah Shahidi embraced a new challenge by being named in Afghanistan's squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. T20 cricket, known for its fast-paced and dynamic nature, presented a fresh opportunity for Shahidi to demonstrate his adaptability. As he donned the Afghan jersey in the T20 World Cup, Shahidi aimed to make his mark in this format, contributing to Afghanistan's aspirations for success in the tournament. His leadership skills, honed through years of international cricket, were further tested as he carried the hopes of the nation in this prestigious event.

In October 2023, Shahidi was entrusted with the captaincy for Afghanistan's ODI World Cup campaign, a testament to his leadership and experience. While his tournament began quietly with just 18 runs against Bangladesh, he quickly found his rhythm. Against India, Shahidi played a crucial knock, scoring 80, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure. His steady presence continued in a vital clash with Pakistan, where he guided Afghanistan home with an unbeaten 48 off 45 balls.

However, it was against Sri Lanka that Shahidi truly stepped up in a must-win game. Coming to the crease with Afghanistan at 73-2, he anchored the innings with a composed half-century, staying not out till the end, alongside Azmatullah, to steer his team to victory. Shahidi’s contributions throughout the tournament reflected his leadership, adaptability, and knack for rising to the occasion when his team needed him most.

Leading the national team is a profound responsibility, and Shahidi accepted it with grace and determination. As captain, Shahidi not only shoulders the cricketing expectations but also represents the spirit and resilience of Afghanistan. His leadership is marked by a commitment to nurturing and guiding the next generation of Afghan cricketers while striving for excellence on the international stage.
