Mithali Raj

Age 43IndiaINDIA
Right Handed Batsman

Before the packed stadia, primetime broadcasts, and franchise millions redefined Indian women's cricket, Mithali Raj batted in near solitude. Trained initially as a classical Bharatnatyam dancer in Hyderabad, her footwork at the crease retained that weightless poise, a steady, rhythmic dance across dusty wickets where the ball rarely arrived at uniform bounce. She held her bat with classical restraint, wrists supple, elbows high, turning fast bowling into a study of quiet geometric placement while carrying the batting line-up of an entire nation on her shoulders for more than two decades.

In an international career stretching from 1999 to 2022, Raj became the undisputed bedrock of the women's game. Across 232 One-Day Internationals, she accumulated 7,805 runs at an average of 50.68, featuring 7 centuries and 64 half-centuries. Though Test matches were criminally rare in her era, she left a lasting mark in the red-ball format across just 12 matches, scoring 699 runs at an average of 43.68. In 2002 at Taunton against England, as a nineteen-year-old, she crafted a sublime 214, which stood as the highest individual score in women's Test cricket for over a decade.

Technically, Raj was a purist's dream. She played late, directly under her eyes, meeting the ball with a straight face and relying on minimal follow-through to absorb pace rather than hit through it. Her signature stroke, a punchy drive through extra cover delivered off either foot, became the visual hallmark of India's top order. Her ability to navigate difficult conditions and absorb immense bowling pressure rendered her an invaluable anchor across two distinct eras of the sport.

Her legacy extends far beyond her six ODI World Cup appearances. Captaining India to two ODI World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017, she steered the national side through its shift from administrative neglect under the Women's Cricket Association of India to full integration under the BCCI. When she stepped away in June 2022, Raj had transformed the landscape for female athletes in India, providing the blueprint for future generations of Indian batters to walk onto the world stage with unshakeable confidence.
