Mohammad Azharuddin

Born in Hyderabad on February 8, 1963, Mohammad Azharuddin made a legendary entrance into international cricket during the 1984–85 home series against England. Blessed with supreme wristwork and artistic flair, he became the first player in Test history to score a century in each of his first three Test matches. Across 99 Test matches, Azharuddin accumulated 6,215 runs at an average of 45.03, featuring 22 centuries and 21 fifties, headlined by a career-best 199 against Sri Lanka. Notably, he remarkably bookended his Test career by scoring a century in both his very first and very last Test innings.

In One-Day Internationals, Azharuddin's fluid strokeplay and iconic flick of the wrists off his pads made him one of the most sublime middle-order batters of his era. Over a 334-match ODI career, he stacked up 9,378 runs at an average of 36.92, becoming the first cricketer in world history to cross the 9,000-run barrier in the format. He registered 7 centuries and 58 fifties, including a career-best 153 not out against Zimbabwe, where he shared a then-world-record 275-run partnership with Ajay Jadeja. His white-ball prowess was further highlighted by a lightning-fast 62-ball century against New Zealand in 1988, which stood for years as one of the quickest ODI hundreds by an Indian.

Appointed national captain in 1989, Azharuddin led Indian cricket through most of the 1990s with a tranquil yet authoritative presence. Across 47 Tests (14 wins) and 174 ODIs (90 wins), he established himself as one of India's most successful captains of his era while leading the nation in three consecutive World Cups. Under his stewardship, India dominated home Test series against England, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, while also capturing Asia Cup titles in 1990-91 and 1995. His leadership was anchored by his own brilliance with the bat, including a dazzling 121 at Lord’s in 1990 and a rapid 74-ball Test century against South Africa in 1996.

In addition to his batting, Azharuddin was a revolutionary presence in the field, holding 105 Test catches and 156 ODI catches as one of international cricket's finest slip and outfield catchers. Though his playing career met a sudden end in 2000 amidst match-fixing allegations, his lifetime ban was eventually set aside by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2012. He subsequently transitioned into public life and sports administration, serving as a Member of Parliament and later as President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association.
