Australia captain Ricky Ponting said on Thursday that he might not play the one-off Twenty20 International against world champions India in Melbourne on Friday to rest his painful back.

"I've been pretty much flat on my back for the last couple of days, just trying to give myself the best chance to recover," Ponting told reporters.

"At the moment, I'm feeling okay but I haven't done anything to test it out yet," he said. Ponting sustained the injury on the fifth and final day of the fourth Test against India in Adelaide last week.

If he eventually decides to skip the game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Michael Clarke will lead the side.

India have won both their previous Twenty20 Internationals against Australia, including one in the World Championship that India clinched in South Africa in September, and Ponting acknowledged the fact.

"For us, maybe there are some scores to settle. We are going to be playing more of it [Twenty20 version] and there's definitely room for improvement for Australia," he said.

Michael Hussey's brother David, who has been prolific in domestic Twenty20 tournament, could make his debut Twenty20 International debut at his adopted home.
