One of the most venerable figures in women’s cricket, she is the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs, and the only batter to have scored 6,000 runs in the format. She is also the captain of the Indian women’s team, but ever wondered what brought Mithali Raj into cricket.

A short but intriguing tale of Mithali’s introduction to cricket was shared by Sachin Tendulkar’s official page on Facebook.

While this is not the first time the world is being told about Mithali’s journey, but it will surely serve as a huge boost in the 34-year-old’s confidence as her team prepares for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 against Australia, in two days’ time — her story has been shared by none other than Tendulkar himself.

A post made on Tendulkar’s Facebook page read, “MEET Mithali Raj: Her father, retired Air Force Sergeant Dorai Raj, wanted to combat 8-year-old Mithali’s habit of sleeping in late every morning. So, he took her along with him to her brother’s Cricket coaching sessions early every morning.”

“If anyone had told 8-year-old Mithali Raj that one day she would grow up to break a world record in Women’s ODI Cricket, she may or may not have believed it. All it takes is a moment when talent is recognised and steered in the right direction. It was great speaking with you yesterday, Mithali. You are a tremendous athlete and it’s always amazing to watch you play. Keep up the great work! Come on, #TeamIndia! All the best, #WomenInBlue! ICC - International Cricket Council UNICEF #CricketForGood,” the post added.

Mithali — who is in UK playing in the World Cup — was pleasantly surprised, and took to Twitter to thank Tendulkar for the gesture.

India Women will take on Australia Women in the semifinal of the World Cup on Thursday at Derby.

While Australia enjoy a terrific record against the Indian Women, it must be remembered that Mithali’s team has won all four matches that they have played at the County Ground in Derby in this World Cup.
