Darren Sammy hasn’t had much to cheer in the IPL so far this season and his mood would only have turned gloomier on Friday after he was axed as West Indies Test skipper.
Sammy’s typically blazing lower order knocks have been missing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and he was dropped for Thursday’s game against Rajasthan Royals.
The West Indies board announced wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin as Test captain, ending Sammy’s four-year tenure where he had to brave questions whether he was the right man to lead the struggling side. Ramdin’s first assignment will be the home series against New Zealand starting next month.
Sammy was replaced by Dwayne Bravo as One-day captain last year, which means he will only lead the T20 side. West Indies thus will have separate skippers for the three formats. Ramdin has led the national side in three T20s and an ODI. He has the experience of captaining Trinidad and Tobago in 37 matches across formats.

But disastrous results on the tours of India and New Zealand last year raised doubts about his leadership abilities and his individual failure as an all-rounder did not help his case.
