The Delhi player had travelled to London to consult a specialist and underwent the surgery there.

Sehwag's long-time coach AN Sharma said: "I had a word with him and he said that the operation (done a couple of days day back) has been quite successful."

"He will be under observation for a few more days and should be back soon," added Sharma. Sehwag underwent surgery for a labrum (shoulder blade) tear.

Although he had led Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite the injury, he opted out of the tournament once the pain became unbearable and it became clear his team had no chance of making it to the play-offs.

The 32-year-old opener had been troubled by the injury earlier too - he missed the one-dayers in South Africa before the World Cup, having skipped the T20 World Cup held in the West Indies last year.

Sehwag had also suffered a shoulder injury way back in 2002 after hurting himself while fielding in a Test against Zimbabwe in New Delhi. That also forced him to miss out on a tour of the Carribbean.
