Rahul Dravid was probably prepared for this. As soon as he walked into the media conference room after the first day’s play against ACT Invitational XI, he was asked how it felt batting in middle-order once again.

Known as someone proficient in handling tricky questions his response was predictable. “Irrespective of where I am playing, I am happy to be playing for my team. My timing hasn’t been as good as I would like it to be, I am slowly getting there,” he said.

There had to be questions on the indifferent form of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni and Dravid was asked whether that was a worry. “I wouldn’t say this is a worry as such, but it’s definitely good to be among the runs or spend some time in the middle. The two haven’t done that here and the sooner they do it, the better.”

Dhoni will certainly keep his place in Perth, but chances are that Yuvraj might not. With Virender Sehwag too unlikely to make the XI, it opens a fresh problem area for India. If Yuvraj goes out and Sehwag doesn’t replace him, then who comes in as batsman? Will Dravid open with Dinesh Karthik deeper down or will it be the other way around?
