"The media focus too much on creating controversies or issues. At times even the minor issues are blown out of proportion," Butt said yesterday.

"The national team is now going to the West Indies for an important assignment and I think the media and the people need to support it completely," he added.

Butt said that he had a lot of faith in the Pakistan team and it was capable of bouncing back from recent problems like the disciplinary actions against some players.

"The PCB is supporting the team in every way and backing it to do well but the team also need complete support of the media and public of the country. The players tend to perform above themselves when they get support from their people and their media," Butt said.

Butt's remarks came after controversy over the method of selection to replace injured Umar Gul and Yasir Arafat.

While the captain and coach in consultation with chief selector Mohsin Khan announced Muhammad Sami and rookie pacer Muhammad Irfan as replacements, Butt stepped in and approved the selection of Sami and left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman.

Although Butt officially stated that Irfan could not be picked since he was not in the provisional 30-member squad, he was upset with the coach for having announced the replacement without his approval.
