Bangladesh fought back against England on the second day of the first test at Lord's, reaching 172-2 at stumps, after bowling England out for 505. Shahadat Hossain took 5-98 for Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal hit 55 and Junaid Siddique made an unbeaten 53, after England's Jonathan Trott had ground his way to 226 from 349 balls, including 20 fours.

Shahadat, who became the first Bangladesh bowler to take a five wicket haul at Lord's, produced a spell of 3-12 from 21 balls after lunch, as England lost four quick wickets in the afternoon session. England began the day in a commanding position on 362-4 but made slow progress, scoring just 42 runs in the first hour. Bangladesh made an early breakthrough when Shahadat had Eoin Morgan caught behind for 44 in the third over, ending a partnership of 112 with Trott. Matt Prior made just 16 before he was run out by substitute fielder Shamsur Rahman, who was on the field while Tamim received treatment for a wrist injury. Trott drove Rubel Hossain for a single but sent Prior back when he was already halfway down the wicket looking for a second, leaving him stranded.

In reply, openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes scored rapidly, putting on 50 from 73 balls in 50 minutes and survived two run-out appeals, after television replays proved they had made their ground by the smallest of margins. England toiled in the field until Tamim was run out by a direct hit from Kevin Pietersen at point, off the last ball of the 22nd over. But a frustrating afternoon for the hosts continued as Siddique joined Kayes for a 46-run partnership that was only broken when the latter edged a neck-high delivery from Steven Finn to England captain Andrew Strauss at first slip. Siddique reached his 50 off 92 balls and comfortably survived until the close, partnered by Jahurul Islam, who finished on 16 not out.

Scores:
England 505 (Andrew Strauss 83, Jonathan Trott 226; Shahadat 5-98) v Bangladesh 172-2 (Tamim Iqbal 55, Junaid Siddique 53 not out).
