Spinner Gagandeep Singh, 18, who was in Meerut to play the CK Nayadu Trophy for Uttar Pradesh Under-22 team, was shot dead on October 9 after being caught in a row between a shopkeeper and a customer in the city.

UPCA Director Jyoti Vajpayee revealed to PTI that although the plan to provide insurance cover to the players was drafted long back, it was only after Gagandeep's death that they are giving it a serious thought.

"We are planning to give the cricketers insurance cover, but as the current season has already commenced, we would implement the plans from the next year. All the members of U-16, 19 and 22 squads would come under the cover," Vajpayee said.

Association would soon talk to the insurance companies to discuss the details of how the cricketers would be benefited in case of an on-field injury or accidental death.
