Shocked and angry Pakistani fans branded their team "traitors" and "match-fixers" and said that Wasim Akram's men should be sent to Kargil as "punishment" after their humiliating defeat to Australia in the World Cup final in 1999.

As the nation plunged in mourning, the distraught fans gave vent to their fury by burning the effigy of Akram and calling for his and other senior members' sacking.

Journalists from the Sub Continent boycotted the opening ceremony of the 1992 World Cup saying that the Cup organisers had demanded 76 dollars for the official inauguration dinner. Some scribes complained that the sum demanded was more than their one month's salary.
