David Bernard Jr scored 60 not out on Sunday to lead West Indies to 192-7 for a lead of 197 runs at tea on the third day of the second Test against Bangladesh. The allrounder, on his 28th birthday, hit six boundaries and a six in 71 balls to play a lone hand as West Indies lost 6-136 after resuming the day on 56-1 at the National Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh captain Shakib-al-Hasan claimed 4-61, while fellow left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jr. grabbed 2-42. There was a wicket apiece for offspinner Mahmudullah, who took 1-37, and fast bowler Shahadat Hossain, who had 1-18.
Bernard and allrounder Darren Sammy shared a partnership of 56 either side of a rain-lengthened lunch interval.
The West Indies, 124-5 at lunch, negotiated the first 45 minutes of the second session against the visitors' spin attack. However, just as the balance was shifting back to the home team, Enamul broke through to remove Sammy to make it 166-6. The 25-year-old Sammy hit two fours for 22 off 50 balls before he miscued a pull and provided a catch to midwicket. One run later, Shakib further dented the West Indies when wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton on 1 edged a drive to gully where Mahmudullah grasped a sharp catch over his head.
Bernard brought up his third 50 of the series with a lofted boundary over midwicket, and dominated an eighth-wicket stand of 20 with Ryan Austin.
Austin fell for 3 just before tea when Hossain returned and forced him to hit a pull shot that was caught at mid-on. Shahadat also made life uncomfortable for Tino Best, but the tailender survived to be 4 not out when the showers arrived to bring an early tea break.
