If you spot BJP lawmakers making a beeline outside a cinema hall, don’t get baffled! Giving a ‘filmy’ twist to netas’ daily regimen, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to hold a group show of a recently-released Bollywood film based on the Emergency (1975-77) for its party MLAs and workers. The BJP’s plan, however, has left the Congress leaders fuming, who have dared it to make a film on the BJP’s pre-poll promises.
The ruling party will soon be putting together a special screening of filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar’s directorial venture ‘Indu Sarkar’, which revolves around the Emergency imposed by the then Congress government under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Cabinet minister and BJP government’s official spokesperson, Madan Kaushik said, “Though the date hasn’t yet been finalized, a group show of ‘Indu Sarkar’ will soon be held for the party MLAs and workers. The period of Emergency was one of the darkest phases of independent India. The film is based on how (the Congress) murdered the democracy in our country. So, by holding this screening, we would send out a message about the resilience of our country’s democracy which is still going strong despite that dark blot (of Emergency).”
The move, on the other hand, has not gone down well with the Uttarakhand Congress, which has accused the BJP of politicizing the issue with an eye on “maligning” the grand old party’s image. Reacting to the BJP’s plan, state Congress leaders, dared the current dispensation of making a film on their own pre-poll promises. “Instead of wasting time on watching a Bollywood film, the BJP leaders should rather make a film on the false and unfulfilled promises they made to the people ahead of the elections, and view it in theatres along with the public,” said senior Congress leader Surendra Kumar.
