A month after demolishing over 350 encroachments on one of the most populated stretches of Dehradun, the local authorities are now gearing up for the second phase of anti-encroachment drive in the city.
While the first phase had covered a 6.5-km stretch from the Inter State Bus Terminus to the Clock Tower, the second phase would cover another stretch along the Rispana bridge-Prince Chowk, and further till Buddha Chowk via Court Road, which is marred by a number of encroachments. “First of all, we’ve identified six sectors (along the target stretch) and appointed nodal officers from different departments for carrying out the drive there,” said Dehradun district magistrate, S A Murugesan.
“The public works department will complete marking the structures within a week after which they will invite objections from the stakeholders concerned. The demolition drive will take place once the cases (with objections) are disposed. The whole process is likely to take about a month’s time. Officials from the police, Dehradun municipal corporation, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority, and departments of electricity, water supply, public works and revenue among others, will also be assisting the nodal officers in carrying out the drive,” added the DM.
Urban development minister Madan Kaushik had conducted a city inspection this May asking the district administration to remove all encroachments from Dehradun to ensure that it “looked like a state capital”. Following the minister’s orders, local authorities identified over 374 encroachments from ISBT to Clock Tower in the first phase, which were eventually demolished in a major anti-encroachment drive in June. In the same month, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), too, had demolished over 156 temporary and permanent encroachments in Doon’s Transport Nagar area.
