DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand police has rescued 331 missing children from different parts of the state and outside in a month-long drive ‘Operation Smile’ held in June.
This was informed by the team members of Operation Smile in an interaction with state police chief MA Ganpathy on Tuesday at the police headquarters in Dehradun. According to the search teams, missing cases were registered for 51 children only while 280 were unregistered recoveries.
“As many as 280 children were reunited their families while the remaining sent to child rehabilitation centres. Efforts are being made to trace whereabouts and locations of their parents in order to send them to their homes,” the DGP told the media after reviewing the month-long drive.
Uttar Pradesh accounts for 75 rescued children, Bihar and Jharkhand (3 each), Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana (4 each), Punjab 8, Chhattisgarh 2 and Assam and West Bengal (1 each). Thirty of the rescued children are from Nepal.
Police officers informed Ganpathy that 14 search teams were constituted and sent to different states, including Maharashtra , Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, in coordination with respective district police heads for rescuing the missing children from places such as dhabas, factories, railway stations and bus stations.
Meanwhile, the DGP maintained that security preparations for the upcoming Kanwar festival were over and Kanwarias will be monitored at every places. Ganpathy asserted no one will be allowed to create law and order problems during the month-long festival after decision was taken in an interstate police meet recently held to discuss security issues.
