International rugby player ‘killed gangster for money’, arrested by Delhi police

Police said Dabas, a distant relative of gangster Satyawan alias Sonu Dariyapur, is the alleged prime accused and conspirator in the triple murder case

A 30-year-old rugby player from Delhi who has represented India in several international championships was arrested for his alleged involvement in the triple murder case of gangster Bhupender alias Monu Dariyapur, his personal security officer and a friend.

Police said Dabas, a distant relative of gangster Satyawan alias Sonu Dariyapur, is the alleged prime accused and conspirator in the triple murder case. Sonu Dariyapur had a long-standing enmity with Monu ever since his sister had married Monu against the family’s wish.

Dabas represented India in Rugby events in Pakistan (2005), in Sri Lanka (2006), and in Uzbekistan in 2015. He was arrested on August 2 with a gun by the special cell team from Aruna Asaf Ali road in south Delhi, following tip-off from informers.

Pramod Singh Kushwah, deputy commissioner of police (SpecialCell/MAC), said, “Dabas was going through a financial crisis and sought help from Sonu Dariyapur, whom he called ‘Mama’ (maternal uncle). Sonu offered to clear his loan but only if Dabas would help him kill Monu.”

Kushwah said Dabas played a key role in the planning and execution of the murderous attack on Monu and his men. He arranged six SIM cards on fake documents and a rented a floor in Delhi’s Nihal Vihar as a hideout for all the attackers on Sonu’s instructions.

“Dabas followed Sonu and others for four days to help Sonu plan the attack. He actively participated in the attack and was carrying a bag containing arms and ammunition given to him by Sonu,” said the DCP. After the murders, Dabas hid in Himachal Pradesh, Dehradun, Haryana, and Kolkata.

In 2007, the DCP said, Dabas despite being an international player fell into the bad company due to his friendship with Sandeep aka Chawalia, a local criminal from Delhi’s Chhawla. The two were arrested in the murder case of one Ranvir Rana from Sonepat and Dabas remained in jail for around three years.

However, he was acquitted in the case as the police failed to produce evidence against him. Even Dabas claimed that he was not involved in the crime and he was falsely implicated, said police.

“After his acquittal, he got his place in the Indian team again represented the country in Uzbekistan in 2015. But the surgery ruined his career and he entered the crime world for money,” said Kushwah.
