NEW DELHI: Heavy rain in several parts of the city on Monday night and Tuesday spelt relief from the muggy weather but brought traffic to a standstill during the day.

South and west Delhi received heavy rain over night with Ayanagar receiving 61.4 mm of rainfall till Monday evening and Najafgarh receiving 42 mm. At the Ridge, the rain gauges received 43.8 mm of rain.

According to the weatherman, more heavy rain is expected on Thursday and Friday.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 35 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal, while the minimum was 28.8 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal. Humidity was between 92% and 63%.

On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 35 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius, respectively. Light rain and thundershowers are expected.

In the coming six days, the maximum temperature will be in the range of 31 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius.

The city should have received 130.4 mm of rain so far but has received only 90.8 mm.

Of eight areas in Delhi that the IMD has looked at, only north Delhi has received surplus rains so far. East Delhi has a deficit of 98% while northeast Delhi has a deficit of 82%. In north west Delhi, the deficit is 59%.

According to IMD officials, the situation should improve in the coming weeks. Delhi is expected to end up with surplus rains when the monsoon season ends in September.

IMD’s long-range monsoon forecast says that northwest region of India, of which Delhi is a part, will be above normal rain this monsoon season. The past two years brought deficient monsoon.
