Five persons were killed and about a dozen others injured when the New Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail collided with a goods train at Karanpurato station in Jharkhand on Wednesday morning.

A railway official said, “The goods train had halted as its engine developed a snag. The passenger train hit it.” The incident took place at 5.50 am, about 500 km from here.
Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi announced ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, R50,000 each to those seriously injured and Rs 10,000 to each of the injured.
Meanwhile, the railways suspended six staff, including the driver, the assistant driver of the goods train and the assistant station master, for dereliction of duty.

The railways announced that the commissioner of railway safety, eastern circle, will conduct a probe into the accident and submit a detailed report.
