The long due project to set up Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) run furnaces at the crematoriums in Green Park Extension and Dwarka Sector-24 is expected to be executed soon. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) recently issued the tender for project inviting bids in this regard. The project had been mentioned in the last three budgets but could not be executed due to the lack of funds. In December last year, while announcing the financial budget for year 2016-17, SDMC commissioner Puneet Goel assured that the furnaces will set up this year.
On Monday, SDMC mayor Shyam Sharma announced that these two projects will be commissioned soon. “An amount of Rs 2.5 crore has been allocated from ‘non-plan’ head for the installation and operation and maintenance of the two new CNG crematoriums within the SDMC jurisdiction. As soon as the process of issuing the work order is completed, construction work will start at these two sites,” he said.
As per the plan, a CNG unit will be installed in each crematorium and the contractor will also be responsible for design and supply of CNG to these units. Apart from this civil, electrical and mechanical work will also be completed under the contract while the contractor will take care of its operation and maintenance for seven years. According to Sharma, the two new CNG crematoriums will help in controlling pollution. “Besides a huge quantity of wood which is being used for cremation at various centres in Delhi can also be saved,” he said.
However, standing committee chairman, SDMC and councillor from Green Park Shailendra Singh said that a CNG unit here is not feasible because of its maintenance cost and limited use. “The crematorium at Green Park extension already has an electronic unit which has not been functioning for years. During my tenure as the health committee chairman in 2013-14 attempt was made to revive this unit. But a majority of residents raised an objection because they didn’t want to use the facility,” he said. According to him, residents are still interested in conducting the last rites in traditional manner.

{{/usCountry}}On the other hand an RWA member from Green Park Extension, had earlier said, “The facility for electric crematorium was stopped due to non-payment of bills before trifurcation. Afterwards we also heard of the plan to establish a CNG facility at the existing crematorium a few years back, but it was never implemented. If the CNG facility starts here, it will not only provide a pollution-free alternate, it will also be convenient for people living close to the crematorium.”
