“All the students have to submit their replies within 24 hours failing which ex-parte decision will be taken,” DS Rawat, DU chief election officer (CEC), said.

The candidates have to respond to the notices, which have been sent to most of the 91 students who are contesting and even filed nominations on their emails, till Tuesday evening.

The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election will be held on September 9.

Authorities said they had to issue the notices as students were using printed material for campaigning which violates the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations (LCR).

According to the LCR, students can use only hand-made posters and cannot deface public property. The LCR even says that students cannot spend more than Rs 5000 on campaigning. In its recent order, the NGT asked DU to ensure environment friendly elections.

Before the nominations were filed, the election office wrote to different political organisations, municipal corporations and Delhi Police to take action against those littering.

Ninety-one candidates are in the fray for the four crucial posts of the students’ body. There are 27 candidates for the post of president, 19 for vice-president, 24 for secretary and 21 for the post of joint secretary.

At least 22 nominations were rejected by the election committee during scrutiny.

Last year, the DUSU polls were swept by ABVP that defeated NSUI and AAP’s Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) to bag all the four positions.
