Though they grew up dealing with bullets and playing with guns, the gang members no longer want their kids to live a life amid fear and hostility.

The gang war that dates to more than two decades has taken the life of at least one member from each active gang operating from the south-western outskirts of the national capital.

The recent fatal attack on former Najafgarh MLA Bharat Singh has once again brought back the fear of a gang war that claimed more than 20 lives over a land dispute.

“Singh’s daughter and two sons came to the city for the last rites and other rituals. They will be sent back to their boarding schools in a few days,” said Krishan Pehalwan, Singh’s brother.

Pehalwan, a strongman of Najafgarh, said they wanted the new generation to be completely isolated from the dispute that claimed his brother’s life.

Singh was shot on Sunday at a farmhouse by eight assailants. In a dramatic attack, the assailants fired thrice from point blank range at Singh, waited for five minutes and even checked his pulse before escaping in a black Scorpio.

Family members and the police suspect the involvement of Udayveer, another local strongman who had planned a similar attack on Singh in 2012.

Locals of Dichaon say that while Udayveer was never involved in criminal activities, the
death of his father and uncle, believed to be orchestrated by Pehalwan, forced a good student into the world of crime.

“Udayveer believed that the murders in his family were planned by Pehalwan. While he was never involved in any crime, it was revenge that brought this meritorious student to the world of crime,” said a local.

He said though Singh’s family has planned a better future for their kids, revenge thrived on previous several occasions.
