The income-tax department has allegedly recovered over `130 crore from Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar.

The recoveries were reportedly made after the I-T department conducted raids at about a dozen offices and residences of Tanwar, his brother Chattar Singh and two of his business associates, sources said.

Tanwar has been allegedly hiding ‘illicit income’ parked in various properties, including farm lands and shopping complexes in Chattarpur, Fatehpur Beri and Mehrauli in Delhi, they said.

The raids were conducted on July 27 at the residence and offices.

“Tanwar and his associates were involved in buying and construction of properties without declaring them in the annual returns and mentioning the source of income. A lot of documents have been seized, which are ownership papers of properties on power of attorney and not on the legal registration format,” sources said.

Some jewellery and cash have been recovered in the raids, the sources said without disclosing the amount.

Terming the claims to be ‘false’, Kartar Singh said he had provided details of all assets and tax returns to the I-T department. “I have no idea how the department has come to that figure. I don’t have a single property that is unaccounted for. Besides giving all details to the I-T department, I have declared all my assets in my election affidavit,” Singh told HT.

According to his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission before the 2015 assembly elections, Tanwar’s total assets amounted to `17.65 crore. His liabilities stand at `9.24 crore.

Rejecting charges of vendetta behind income tax raids against an Aam Aadmi Party MLA, minister of state for finance Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday said any lawmaker doing illegal things will have to face legal scrutiny.

“This government does not work with vendetta,” he told reporters when asked to comment on the I-T raids against Tanwar.

The AAP has termed the raids as “witch-hunt” by the BJP-led NDA government.
