Sent to Arunachal Pradesh to look into reports that the Siang river was abnormally drying up near the historic Pasighat town, a BJP study group has suggested that India sign an agreement with China, Bangladesh and Bhutan to enable joint inspection on the usage of the waters by the countries upstream.
"This agreement could be on the lines of the Indus Water Treaty and will basically ensure that the lower riparian states are not affected with such usage," said Tapir Gao, general secretary, BJP, who led the study group comprising MPs and Sriram Vedire, convener of the party's water management cell.
The move acquires significance in the backdrop of allegations that China is constructing a dam at Zangmuin in Tibet in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo, which has led to diversion of the water that flows into the Brahmaputra.
