Rs 300 for a rose? No way! How about buying one for Rs 5 this Valentine’s Day?

Picking out the perfect flower is no bed of roses around Valentine’s Day. A stem of rose that is otherwise priced between Rs10 and Rs 20 can even cost Rs 250 on V-Day. Right from that fancy flower shop to the roadside florist, all charge a bomb for a red rose.

“One bunch of roses — about six to twelve flowers — is sold between Rs 700 and 1,400 during Valentine’s week. Delhiites don’t mind paying extra for their loved ones,” says Raju, a local vendor in Connaught Place, Delhi.

Prices of roses vary from area to area. The most expensive ones are sold in Saket, South Delhi, followed by CP and then Kamla Market. Local vendors buy flowers from whole sale flower mandis and sell them at sky high rates. “During Valentines week, red rose are high on demand and customers want best quality flowers. I have even sold a red rose at Rs 300. However, pink, yellow, orange and white roses are comparably cheaper than red. Every day we order around 50 kgs of roses from Ghazipur mandi,” says Sameer, a florist in Saket.

However, if you are looking for pocket friendly flowers, visit wholesale flower mandis in Chattarpur and Ghazipur. Pick any rose for just Rs 5 and a bunch of twelve between Rs 50 and 60.

Anand Kumar, owner of a flower shop in Ghazipur, says, “We get roses from Bangalore, North-eastern states and from nearby areas also. We sell flowers at whole sale price and therefore they are low in price. During Valentines week, depending on the quality, one red rose is priced at Rs. 5. On a normal day, we sell them at Rs. 2.”
