For the residents of Munirka Enclave, there has never been a dull afternoon since South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) began a tree plantation drive last week in the locality. As gardeners work in the area parks, garden enthusiasts and curious children come out of their houses to watch them.

Last year, during monsoon, saplings were planted in more than 10 parks of the locality. But this time, the target is to plant saplings along the boundaries at big parks and inside the complex of the community centre.

“We want our locality to be as eco-friendly as possible. Last year’s plantation drive was a huge success. Except for a few saplings, most of them survived and many are blooming with flowers,” said Hira Lal Wangnoo, president of Munirka Enclave Residents’ Association (MERA).

SDMC officials give credit to the locals for the success of last year’s plantation drive, which they hope will continue this year as well. “We provide gardeners for regular maintenance of the parks where saplings are planted. But growth and preservation of trees is not possible without the cooperation of locals. Munirka Enclave is one such example, where locals have put in efforts to make their locality green,” said an SDMC official.
