Delhiites continue to call up the Lieutenant Governor’s (LG) office for help despite a separate helpline created for police assistance and civic issues. Failing to get a response from the concerned departments, residents have resorted to posting their complaints to ‘Listening Post’ — the LG’s citizen helpline launched in 2007.
The helpline has received 2,292 complaints this year, up from 1,263 received in 2009. The complaints have been pouring in from across the city about various departments, including MCD, Delhi Police, Delhi Jal Board, power distribution companies, Delhi Development Authority, among others.
More than 60 % of the complaints received this year are against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) — the agency that provides civic amenities to 94% of Delhiittes, followed by Delhi Police and Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
“Out of the 1,422 complaints received against the MCD 1,070 have already been addressed so far. Also, people have filed 395 complaints against the Delhi Police. Out of that, only 40 complaints are pending to be addressed,” said a senior official. “We have received 1,029 more complaints this year,” he said.
Officials said the reason behind so many people have been using this helpline is the fact that it cuts across multiplicity of authorities — the LG being the administrative head of the Capital. “Listening Post has been receiving complaints from across the city. People can file their complaints about any department. Complaints have been received about potholed roads, ill-maintained parks, shortage of water, garbage not being lifted from colonies, unauthorised construction, clogged drains and sewers, FIR not being registered by the police etc. As soon as we receive the complaints, we forward it to the department concerned, and they have to take action on them within a stipulated period,” said a senior official.

People can file their complaints online, by calling up the helpline number or in person too. Officials said most of the complaints made are those that have not been addressed for several years by the agencies concerned.
