Delhi Police use Gypsy and Qualis vehicles as police control room (PCR) vans. Now, they are thinking of buying Chevrolet Taveras. Why?

For the comfort of all the injured people they ferry to hospitals. After all, as Police Commissioner YS Dadwal put it during Friday’s press conference, “Delhi Police are the biggest ambulance service in Delhi.”

And he was not exaggerating. Their crammed PCR vans carried 45,398 patients during 2008, against 25,300 carried by the Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS) — Delhi state’s ambulance services.

Persons ferried by PCRs included victims of road accidents, blasts, domestic violence and other crimes.

“People have a tendency to first dial 100 (the police response number), than call up the ambulance in case of accidents,” explained Rakesh Behari, Principal Secretary (health), Delhi government.
