Akoijam Mirabai Devi is a sitting Congress MLA from Patsoi assembly constituency in Imphal West District. The 57-year-old was once in Okram Ibobi's cabinet as the social welfare minister from 2012-2017. Unlike other women legislators who had family support, Mirabai is a single woman who has worked her way to the top. A post-graduate in social work and a resident of Taobungkhok Awang Leikai village, she began her political career as a Congress Seva Dal worker in 1980. By 1990, she became the general secretary of the state Mahila Congress, and later the secretary of the state Congress unit and its vice-president in 2000. Mirabai has been with the Congress since 1996 and is the only woman candidate from the party seeking re-election from the Patsoi seat.
