Manipur election results 2022 highlights: BJP wins 32 seats, Cong settles with 5

The final results of Manipur assembly election results are out, and the BJP has emerged victorious for the second time as was predicted. The party has bagged 32 seats, while the Congress has managed to win only five.

Results of one seat remain to be released in Manipur although BJP is clearly the winner. The saffron camp has bagged 32 seats of the 60 assembly constituencies, while the Congress party has managed to win only five. JD(U), Naga People's Front and National People's Party have bagged six, five and six seats, respectively.

Results for 47 seats out of 60 have been declared so far. The Bharatiya Janata Party has won 23, and leading on nine. National People's Party has bagged six, while Naga Peoples Front's tally is at four.

The ruling is steadily marching towards victory as it bagged 20 seats, while maintaining a lead on 11 seats. It is followed by National People's Party with three wins. 

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) inched closer towards returning to power in Manipur, incumbent chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said the party would continue to have an alliance with the Naga Peoples' Front (NPF), a part of the current ruling coalition, when it forms the next government. The ruling BJP looked set to return to power in the insurgency-hit state of Manipur, as it bagged 14 seats and was leading in 12 other constituencies, as per the latest ECI data.

Newly formed Kuki Peoples' Alliance, which contested from two seats, makes its debut. Party candidate Kimneo Haokip Hangshing wins Saikul seat by a margin of 1249 votes from nearest Independent rival, Kenn Raikhan.

"We will take time to stake a claim to form a government, let the results be out. Our national leaders will decide on Chief Minister face, we will focus on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mantra of inclusive development," says Manipur CM on assembly elections results.

BJP gains 11 seats in Manipur. Congress and National People's Party (NPP) win two seats each. An Independent candidate has also secured victory.

Former chief minister and Congress legislature party leader Okram Ibobi Singh retains his coveted Thoubal seat. He beat his nearest rival BJP candidate L Basanta by a margin of more than 2000 votes. In 2017 polls Ibobi won the seat by a margin of more than 10,000 votes

"I don't think National Peoples' will be with us (be part of the next government). Naga Peoples' Front will continue to be part of the coalition government," says Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh says after his win.

The BJP’s impressive show in the Manipur assembly elections is a reflection of people's acceptance of the party and its governance, state unit president A Sharda Devi said as the party is set for a clean sweep. 

Karong Onkholer, huband of boxer Mary Kom, trails in Saikot constituency. BJP's Paolienlal Haokip is leading there. 

Onkholer was contesting as an independent. 

After a gap of 22 years, Janata Dal (United) managed to record a win in Manipur on Thursday with its candidate from Tipaimukh seat pipping others to the post.

Counting of votes in the Manipur assembly polls could get delayed by a few hours on Thursday as several returning officers are responsible for more than one constituency. "We have a total of 41 counting halls where counting of votes for 41 seats are taking place at present. Once counting process is over for these seats, counting for the remaining 19 seats will start," chief electoral officer Rajesh Agarwal said.

BJP's Thokchom Satyabrata Singh has retained Yaiskul Constituency. He defeated NPP's Huidrom Vikramjit Singh. 

Former chief minister and senior Congress Okram Ibobi Singh takes lead in Thoubal constituency. BJP's Leitanthem Basanta Singh trailing by 1,606 votes. 

After leading on 22 seats till 12pm, the BJP has come down to 21. Congres is at three. National People's Party (NPP) is at 7. 

Chief minister N Biren Singh of BJP wins from Heingang seat. Defeats Congress rival P Sharatchandra by nearly 18,000 votes.

Heading for a clean sweep, the BJP has extended their lead to 18. According to the updated EC data, Congress is down to four seats now; JD(U) is leading on 4; Kuki People’s Alliance is leading on 1; National People's Party (NPP) is leading on 8. While the Naga Peoples Front is ahead on 4. 

The BJP marched ahead as it secures lead on 15 seats now, the update data on the Election Commission's site show. Congress is at five.

Former chief minister and Congress legislature party leader Okram Ibobi Singh leading in Thoubal seat.
