A prominent politician in Manipur, Govindas Konthoujam is a former minister and six-time Congress MLA from Bishnupur assembly constituency in Manipur. An arts graduate, he was elected for the first time from Bishnupur as the lone Congress MLA in the state in 1995. He has life membership in various sports and cultural bodies in Bishnupur district. He was also the chief whip of the Congress Legislature Party. He was appointed as the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president in December 2020. But he resigned from the MPCC and the state assembly to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in August 2021. The 58-year-old seasoned politician is seeking re-election on a BJP ticket from his native Bishnupur constituency in the elections.
