Y Khemchand Singh began his political career after he joined the Democratic Revolutionary People's Party in 2002. A martial arts trainer, Khemchand is seeking re-election in the first phase of polling from Singjamei constituency. Khemchand contested on an All India Trinamool Congress ticket in 2012 from Singjamei, but lost by just 156 votes. However, he was elected to the Manipur legislative assembly in 2017 from Singjamei as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. He is the current Speaker of the Manipur assembly. Khemchand, a resident of Yumnam leikai in Imphal West district, was once a well-known sports person and taekwondo instructor who had founded the Assam Taekwondo Association. He also headed the taekwondo association in Manipur before getting actively involved in politics.
