Bharatiya Janata Party's Palturam won the election upstaging Indian National Congress's Shivlal by a margin of 24,860 votes.
94.8% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Bharatiya Janata Party's Palturam grabbed a total of 89,401 votes, while Indian National Congress's Shivlal got 64,541 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Ram Sagar Akela bagged 26,011 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 47.1%, 34.0% and 13.7% respectively.
In Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2012, Samajwadi Party's Jagram Paswan defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's Ramapati Shastri by 18,262 votes.
