In the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election, there were 8 candidates in the fray from Kaliganj constituency. Kaliganj was one of 44 seats won by the All India Trinamool Congress. It was an extremely close fight, with Indian National Congress's Hasanuzzaman Sk narrowly winning the election upstaging All India Trinamool Congress's Ahamed Nasiruddin (LAL) by a slim margin of 1,227 votes.
The top two candidates split 91.8% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's Hasanuzzaman Sk got a total of 85,125 votes, while All India Trinamool Congress's Ahamed Nasiruddin (LAL) secured 83,898 votes. Bharatiya Janta Party's candidate Saikat Sarkar secured 10,373 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 46.2%, 45.6% and 5.6% respectively.
In West Bengal Assembly election 2011, All India Trinamool Congress's Nasiruddin Ahamed(LAL) defeated Revolutionary Socialist Party's Sankar Sarkar by 17,178 votes.
