The much-acclaimed movie Loins of Punjab Presents had its DVD release on May 31. One may wonder why the long delay, considering the film was released at the theatres in 2007. When asked, director Manish Acharya said, “The film was purchased by a Canadian sales agent who requested us not to release the DVD in India, as he was selling the theatrical rights of the movie to other countries. So we had to wait.”
The launch was held at Crossword, Kemps Corner. The theme of the launch — Loins Idol — was much in context of the movie’s Desi Idol, which was judged by actor Shabana Azmi and DJ Suketu. The Loins Idol competition had 18 contestants, the youngest being six-and-a-half years of age. The winner was decided on audience response.
Talent galore
Before the competition started, Azmi addressed the contestants saying, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to be wicked like I was in the movie. That was all Manish and not me!” Acharya said, “I strongly believe that when you look for talent, nothing but talent will come forward.” Azmi echoed his observation, saying, “India has a wide range of talent. This is just a small step for people to show their talent.”
The judges had a difficult time in choosing the final two winners. Both of them agreed that “it was like comparing oranges and apples”. Darshi Jain (10) and Maithili Zatakiya (15) emerged winners and the latter was crowned the Loins Idol.
Speaking about his expectations from the DVD release, Manish said, “I’m hoping it will do better than the movie, because we have a new eager crowd waiting for the DVD to release.” After declaring the Loins Idol, Azmi joked, “Let’s not forget that it’s the official launch of the DVD of Loins Of Punjab... So, go quickly and buy your copies guys. There’s no free lunch!”
