Jurassic Park, Godzilla, Journey to the Center of the Earth... Hailing from a generation that grew up watching these classic creature adventures, The End of Oak Street was a nostalgic ride, one that taps into the wonder of old-school sci-fi while giving the familiar dinosaur movie a fresh, R-rated spin.
Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film follows the Platt family, Denise (Anne Hathaway), Greg (Ewan McGregor) and their two children, Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery), whose ordinary life takes a U-turn when a mysterious cosmic event rips their entire neighbourhood and transports it to a prehistoric world. Suddenly, the family finds itself surrounded by dinosaurs and other creatures, with survival depending on one simple thing: staying united.
The premise is a tried and tested recipe for creature chaos, and Mitchell, best known for It Follows, delivers plenty of it. The screenplay begins at a slow pace, and even when the bizarre developments begin, the adrenaline rush takes time to build. Once it does, though, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, coupled with a few edge-of-the-seat ones too. If Jurassic Park was filmed for IMAX back in the day, this is what it would probably look like.
The VFX is seamless, while cinematographer Michael Gioulakis does an excellent job of capturing the scale and mayhem. The film also understands that sometimes what you don't see can be more frightening than what you do. When the first dinosaur appears on screen, it isn't simply thrown at the audience. Its arrival is teased by something moving rapidly behind a bush, sending objects flying and building a sense of dread before the creature is finally revealed. The result is a curious blend of Spielbergian adventure.
