Ask event manager Vikram Ahuja, who spends almost 40% of his earning on buying gifts for his girlfriend. “I love to see her beam every time she opens an expensive surprise gift.”

Gift shops such as Archie’s have gift items such as wine bottle case or a golf putting set for R80,000. Gourmet dining is also not limited to the elite now. “Youngsters don’t mind spending a fortune on food packages,” says Surender Singh Thakur, F&B director, The Imperial.

Expensive spa sessions also are a hit among the young, says Alka Katar, spa director, Radisson Hotel.
