Music to the ears

Music, I discovered a very long time ago can have a directly proportional effect on your mood and emotions.

So close no matter how far; couldn’t be much more from the heart; forever trusting who we are... and nothing else matters. Before you think it or even say it... No, this is not my attempt at a pseudo intellectual discussion but the very stirring lyrics of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. When you hear the song with the smoky, deep voice of James Hetfield, it just transports you to another space altogether.

And that’s what I’ve been doing in scenic Coorg... re-discovering a very effective form of healing. Music, I discovered a very long time ago can have a directly proportional effect on your mood and emotions. And so, through various genres of music, I’ve been rehabilitating my mind, body and soul.

Over the years, I have created huge ‘playlists’ with songs for every mood — from ‘I’m happy’ to ‘I’m sad’ and from ‘I feel like dancing’ to ‘I feel like just lying around doing nothing’, there’s one for every mood. There’s even a playlist for ‘I’m irritated and I want to kick some a#*’ and ‘ooh! it’s raining’.

The dual effect of being cocooned in Coorg with few interruptions and the mindspace to think, has put me into reflection mode. And my perfect, undemanding companion through all this is my music. This was the first time that I consciously worked with the music to delve into various aspects of my life.

I threw the playlists out for a few days and went with shuffle mode. And what a discovery it was... I was wildly thrown about, from head banging to mopey... from Rihanna’s Rude Boy, Muse’s Time Is Running Out and La Roux’s Bullet Proof to Drake’s Miss Me and Eminem’s Not Afraid... it was a complete roller-coaster ride! Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Muse and Metallica where just some of the many companions I’ve been regularly ‘hanging out with’ here in Coorg.
