Shelley Duvall, The Shining and Nashville star, passes away at 75

Shelley Duvall, the acclaimed actress known for her roles in 'The Shining' and 'Nashville', has passed away at 75 due to diabetes complications.

‘The Shining’ and ‘Nashville’ actress Shelley Duvall passed away on Thursday at her residence in Blanco, Texas, at the age of 75.

Her partner, Dan Gilroy, confirmed the news, revealing that Duvall had been bedridden for several months due to diabetes complications and was under hospice care. Gilroy said she peacefully passed away in her sleep.

“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” Gilroy told The Hollywood Reporter.

“She's gone after much suffering,” he later told NBC News. “I can't tell you how much I miss her.”

‘The Shining’ and ‘Popeye’ star leaves behind a legacy in the film industry, having collaborated with acclaimed director Robert Altman on numerous projects, including her debut role in ‘Brewster McCloud’ (1970).

She also appeared in ‘McCabe & Mrs. Miller,’ ‘Thieves Like Us,’ ‘Nashville,’ ‘Buffalo Bill and the Indians,’ and Woody Allen's ‘Annie Hall.’

In Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic ‘The Shining,’ where she starred alongside Jack Nicholson. Reflecting on the making of ‘The Shining’ in a 1981 interview with People magazine, Duvall revealed the immense emotional toll it took on her.

“I will never give that much again. If you want to get into pain and call it art, go ahead, but not with me.”

Duvall also played Olive Oyl in the 1980 comedy ‘Popeye,’ starring Robin Williams.

However, in the 1990s, Duvall began to step away from acting. According to the AP, she became increasingly reclusive, choosing to live a quieter life away from the limelight.

Duvall last role was in the 2023 film ‘The Forest Hills,’ marking her return to the screen after more than two decades. Her previous role had been as Detective Dubrinski in ‘Manna from Heaven’ in 2002.
