The campus scene in the Capital is abuzz with the news that the students of Jamia Milia Islamia University are demanding the same election process that elects the students union in Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal University (JNU) every year. Authorities, however, are quiet on the matter.
The process kicked off when students of the University under the banner of Forum for Students Democracy (FSD), wrote a letter to the vice chancellor, demanding elections for the student body. “We want to question the inability of the university in providing basic democratic rights to the students. The students must not be deprived of a democratic space and exercise. They must not be rendered politically backward,” says Afroz Alam Sahil, convenor, Forum for Student Democracy.
“When student union elections can be held in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU), then why not here,” says Sahil.
The group recently met in DU and JNU to discuss the process. Meanwhile, the university authorities are not sure of approving the request. “My sympathies are there for the cause of students union, but there are many practical problems involved. It’s too early to take a decision,” says Prof Masud Alam, the proctor of the university.
The students have also hosted a petition online, launched a Right to Information campaign and are taking their demand forward with their Facebook page. “We are trying our best to garner support. The protest is at a very early stage,” adds Sahil.
